An Interview with Our New Children's Director, Christina Milian!

September 1, 2021

As you've hopefully heard by now, we have welcomed a wonderful Children's Ministry Director, Chris(tina) Milian, to our team! Though we hope you'll meet her and get to know her soon, we wanted to do a little bit of a get-to-know-you interview for this week's newsletter. If you want to grab coffee with Chris to get to know her, or reach out to volunteer to help in Children's Ministry, feel free to send her an email or talk to her at Sunday's service!

So Chris, how did you end up in LA? I came for vacation in 2018 and fell in love with LA! At the same time, I really felt God calling me to this city to do ministry so I moved here in January of 2020.

When did you know you wanted work in CM? I grew up participating in Children's Ministry and really loved having that as a part of my childhood. Everything I learned was shaping who I grew up to be, and I want to provide that for other kids. I learned from a young age how Jesus sees me and loves me, and that helped me through difficult seasons later in life. The seeds that are planted at a young age grow beyond elementary school! I hope to teach about God's love in creative ways so that our kids can have a great foundation of truth as they grow up.

Tell us about your family. I have my mom and two older brothers. My mom actually  moved to California with me, and my two older brothers live in Miami! We are a really small family since both my parents are only children, so I didn't grow up with cousins or uncles/aunts. That made a us a really close, tight knit family. We are also Cuban, so even though we are a small but loud family! i also have my dog named Rosy and my cat named Chiquitina (or Chi for short).

What is your favorite/least favorite thing about Miami? Fave: beaches! eLast fav: mosquitos and 100% humidity ALL THE TIME.

What is your fave/least fave thing about LA? I love the variety of things there are to do! I especially love driving through the canyons. That feels like my home way from home. My least favorite thing is probably how hard it is to find parking at restaurants and events.

What about music, what do you like to listen to these days? Anything James Bay! He just came out with a new song called "Chasing Stars". I also listen to ALOT of spanish music, Selena, Luis Miguel, Camilo, etc. My all time favorite song is "I'll Be Seeing You" by Billie Holiday.

What's your favorite ice cream flavor? Anything with cocunut or caramel!

What are some things you dream/pray about for the kids at TW? I want them to know God's love in Jesus and take that love to all of their friends and family. I really want to create a space where creativity is celebrated because we love and serve such a creative God who created the most beautiful things I have ever seen! I want the kids to feel like they are home when we are together. I pray everyday that God can show us how to be intentional with our children. I pray for the wonderful team of volunteers and families God will bring together to carry out this wonderful ministry, because I definitely can't and don't want to do this on my own!

What's your go to coffee order? Ohhhhhhhh I love an iced vanilla oatmilk latte from Coffee Bean. :)

What's your go-to... grocery store? Shoes? Take-out? Restaurant? Beach? Place to shop?Grocery store: Vons but there is a Cuban Market in Venice called "el camaguey" where they have all kids of Cuban food and fruit, vegetables that are specific to my culture that you can't get anywhere else. i.e. malangas (let me know if you want me to give you more details about that). Shoes: You will always seeing me wear booties, mules or vans. Take-out: Big fan of Tex-Mex takeout. Restaurants: Eggsellent Cafe or Crave Cafe for breakfast, Rodini Park for Mediterranean, or custom burgers from The Counter. Beach: Zuma beach is usually my go to beach. Shopping: I love Target, or how i say it, "tar-jay".
